Irrtümer beim Zusammenbau des Cheops-Schiffes Nr. 1 ?
by Gerhard Kapitän
|
|
Summary
The author discusses the questions whether Cheops ship no. 1 had or
had not bilge edges and whether the central part of the bottom was
flat, as her reconstruction shows, or was rounded. Furthermore the paper
deals with the alledged »keel« and the asserted watertightness of
the hull.

Großtiertransporte zu Wasser im antiken Vorderasien und Nordafrika
by Karin Hornig
|
|
Summary
The paper deals with waterborne transport of big animals in the Near
East and North Africa. The shipment of horses, cattle, deer, camels
and elephants is attested already in the 3rd and 2nd millennium. Besides
archaeological and written sources bones found in wrecks and land
excavations bear evidence. Furthermore the author evaluates reports of
modern travellers and ethnological studies.

Der antike Hafen von Histria
Unterwasserprospektion zur Suche nach dem antiken Hafen von Histria (Rumänien) im Jahre 1998
by Olaf Höckman
|
|
Summary
In the 1998 campaign at Histria (Rumania) the so-called »Chaussée«,
identified in the 1996 campaign, was investigated by sonar and divers,
and mapped. This manmade concentration of stones turned out to consist
of two lines likely to have formed Archaic walls Northeast of Acropolis
Hill. In a shallow bay of Sinoe Lagoon widely overgrown by reed, the
sonar identified straight moats which seem to form part of Hellenistic,
or Roman fortifications around the »Harbour Gully« West of Acropolis
Hill, identified in 1996.

Unterwasserarchäologie in polnischen Flüssen und Seen
Teil II: Brücken
by Gerard Wilke
|
|
Summary
Continuing his article on settlements in Polish lakes ( SKYLLIS
1, 1998 no. 2, p. 24-36) the author surveys the underwater archaeological
work done on bridges and bridge-like constructions built in early
historic and medieval times. The survey starts with the earliest
findings made during drainage works on wetlands late in the 19th
century and ends in the present days.

Das Buddy Phone STX-100
Testbericht der DEGUWA über das Unterwasserkommunikationssystem der Firma JWL-Aqualung
by Olaf Thelen
|
|
Summary
On July 19th, 1997 a DEGUWA team tested the underwater communication
system »Buddy Phone« by the company JWL-Aqualung.
This system is an underwater communication system which is realized
by ultrasonic. The modulation type is a single-sideband modulation.
For the test we had two Buddy Phone systems with hearing and speaking
modules and one wholeface mask, one half-face mask and one base
station.
The base station by which the diver can contact the surface is designed
to be used ashore as well as on board.
All systems are normally in the hearing mode, only when you push the
microphone key and hold it, the system switches to the speaking mode.
The system turned out to be useful during activities like searching,
surveying and measuring of fi nds or reporting a fi rst-glance
impression of them. However, the system is only of limited applicability,
if the diver has to work with both hands, since when speaking he must
press the speaking key continuously in order to be able to communicate.

Das »Schiffsarchäologische Seminar« der Universität Rostock
by Henrik Pohl
|
|
Summary
A »Schiffsarchäologisches Seminar« has been organized at the University
of Rostock every summer since 1996. The seminar`s priority aim is to
impart knowledge in the field of maritime archaeology and fundamental
principles of prospecting wrecked ships. The classes are held in the
form of block seminars within 9 days. Thirty lessons are scheduled
for the theoretical part and about the same number for the practical
training. Students, but also interested amateurs or divers are potential
participants in this seminar. There are intentions to extend this
seminar to a regular education of maritime archaeologists.
