Projects Campaign in Corsica (October 2005)
By the end of September and the beginning of October the DEGUWA
has carried out an underwater excavation in the bay of Santa Manza in
Corsica. This site had been investigated two years before by the DEGUWA.
In this second campaign the site was revisited for a more thorough
examination.
Campaign in Corsica (October 2003)
In October 2003 the DEGUWA carried out a campaign for 14 days at the
southeastern coast of Corsica. Three sites were selected for detailed
inspection, i.e. the Punta di Rondinara, the passage between the isles
of Lavezzi and Cavallo as well as the bay of Santa Manza.
Andreas M. Stolpe has also written an article on this campaign in Taucher.Net ( Part I | Part II ) (German!). Survey in Sardinia (September 2001)
The DEGUWA was approached on behalf of an old collection of underwater
finds, which originated from southern Sardinia. The examination of these
artefacts soon raised the question of the context, although it was clear
that it could be only reconstructed partially. Hence the DEGUWA set up a
team of divers amongst its members, which met in Fall 2001 in southern
Sardinia to carry out a survey.
"The treasure of the Cloud Warriors" (July 2000)
"German archaeologists on an Andes-expedition.
A spectacular expedition in the Peruvian rainforest. A German research team bundles diving equipment and high-tech sonars on horses and mules. Their destination: the Laguna de Los Condores, a legendary lake in the Andes in an altitude of 4000m. Recently 200 well-preserved mummies of Inca ancestors were discovered in a burial house in proximitry to the lake. The assumption of the archaeologists: the lagoon might have served the tribe "Chachapoya" for sacrifices. Will the German research team find the votive offerings of the Cloud Warriors? As first human beings ever they made the attempt to dive in this lake." "a&o buero" shot a TV documentary about this expedition. The just cited text is the introduction to this documentary by "a&o buero". Their website features the Making-Of and excerpts from the film text. Kap Ognina in Sicily (July/August 1998)
The 5. August was a special day of our campaign in Ognina 98: Four
vessels anchored off the harbour entrance of the small fishing village
Ognina, sheltered by a small preliminary island. An elated group of
people witnessed calmly an archaeological climax: The salvage of a stone
anchor-stock from the 5th century BC.
It is by no means an unimportant find, as it marks the chronological division line between one & two armed anchors and hence fits in as link to illustrate a gradual rather than sudden change at the end of the 6th century BC. The salvage was of course not the only undertaking of our 4-week campaign. The main goal was a survey at a shoal off the coast. This investigation bore a further surprise for the archaeologists... Project »General Carleton of Whitby« (1996)
In 1995 sportdivers discovered off Dembki in the Pasnitz estuary
(ca. 100 km westerly of Gdansk, Poland) a wreck. According to the
nomenclature of the Polish Maritime Museum it was registered as W32.
The archaeologists were in a lucky position, as the first excavation
yielded the name of this ship: "General Carleton of Whitby 1777". This
lucky circumstance facilitated further research to reconstruct the
dramatic end of this once proud merchantman. Another report about this
wreck could be found on
Per Åkesson's homepage.
Kap Ognina in Sicily (1995)
Between the 14th and 29th July, DEGUWA in conjunction with the
Soprintendenza in Syracuse (Sicily) carried out an underwater
archaeological campaign at a shoal off Cape Ógnina. The mission of the
DEGUWA-team was the completion of a project, which was started in 1979
by sportdivers of the VDST under the direction of Dr. Friedrich
Naglschmid and Gerhard Kapitän.
Apart from the rediscovery of the findspot "Ógnina IV" on "Secca di Ógnina" and its reassessment and exact measurements, the investigation on land and under water was sought to be completed. After 15 years this was the first underwater-archaeological campaign in Italian waters, that was carried out under German direction. The website of the University of Duisburg features a report about the underwater-archaeological campaign "Ógnina IV" (German!). Campaign in Mahdia (1993)
